When we think about “other cultures,” we often think about people in countries other than our own- often countries that are far away. And yet, most countries have cultural divides internally. For example, Belgium has Flemish- and French-speaking groups that are often at odds, and Canada has English- and French-speaking groups, as well as Indigenous Canadian groups. India has many groups, with tensions notable especially between Hindu and Muslim religious groups. The United States historically has had cultural divides, which seem to have been magnified during the past several years. What are factors that cause and increase cultural divides within countries? What kinds of concrete steps can be taken to bridge these divides and heal the psychological wounds they can create?
