Overview
Sociologists study the connection between individuals and society, applying three key theoretical perspectives to understand the social world. Each perspective provides a different focus for explaining social problems, such as divorce, and their impacts within the private and public spheres of society.
Interactionists focus on micro-level action (i.e., individual, small group factors) and the meanings we attach to them, and how we communicate with one another.

Functionalists focus on macro-level functions (i.e., institutions, structures) to see how components of society fit together.

Conflict theorists focus on macro-level inequalities (i.e., dominant group, power) to understand how conflict is created between competing groups.
You will use the three theoretical perspectives to respond to this week’s discussion questions examining divorce rates and the effects of divorce on society.
You should spend approximately 3 hours on this assignment.
Instructions
First, examine the research on marriage and divorce rates in the U.S. that are discussed in your assigned readings.

Then, in your post (minimum of 150 words) respond to the following questions:
What are the causes and consequences of divorce? Why are patterns of divorce often cyclical in nature?

Using either the functionalist, interactionist, or conflict perspective, explain the impact of family violence on individuals and communities.
