A Moment in the Sun
– Paper #1 ~ Due October 12
Character, Culture, and Power (or Powerlessness)
From the chapter, we learned so far (FRONTISPIECE-FURLOUGH). Select one of the novel’s important characters and explore the links between the character’s life
and times. What role does culture play in how the character relates to the world, and how others
relate to the character? How do issues of class, gender and race influence the challenges,
privileges (or lack thereof), and prospects faced by the character? In what ways is the character
lacking power and authority? In what ways does the character possess some measure of
autonomy and authority?
Using a few select scenes, actions, and words, reflect on the nature of the character thus far in the
novel. How might the character serve the larger thematic concerns of the novel? In addition to
citing A Moment in the Sun, use at least one secondary source to add a little depth to your
exploration of the character.
The analysis of the character you select is an opportunity for some strategic rereading and
reflection. The paper is short (4-5 pages), so your character study is not meant to be definitive.
Your reflections and assessments are at the heart of this short paper.
